A few years ago, I realized that I couldn't identify most of the flowers that I saw during my hikes in and near Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. In order to learn the names of more of the flowers I saw, I put together this page. Hopefully, it will help you identify some of the more common flowers you see during your visit to these parks. Keep in mind that my scientific training is in geology, not botany. More than likely, I have made a number of errors in identification. Initially, I thought of identifying only to genus. I hope the botanists among you are not offended that I have attemped to identify most of the flowers to species. Where I have made errors, please send feedback if you have the time.

Like my favorite references, I have organized my images by color. They are also organized in a multiple spreadsheet list by common name, Family, Genus, and elevation.

There are a number of readily available and easily usable references for the amateur. I used Stocking and Rockwell's Wildflowers of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks as my principle reference. Even more helpful in many ways is Elizabeth Horn's Sierra Nevada Wildflowers. Another excellent source is Sierra Nevada Wildflowers by Karen Wiese, especially helpful because it is organized by color. A more comprehensive but less local guide, also organized by color, is the National Audobon Society's Field Guide to Wildflowers - Western Region by Richard Spellenberg. A more comprehensive reference is provided by UCBerkeley at its CalPhoto Plant image collection which contains more than 64,000 images.
